Tamworth Two Day Tour
Some of the Club's members travelled to Tamworth on the weekend of 9th and 10th August to ride in the Tamworth 2 Day Tour. This report is taken from the Central Coast Cycling Club's Forum http://www.impactcycling.com.au/index.php , and was put together by our very own Chicken, aka, Wayne....

Hodgee, Ben, Elliot, and myself in Hodgee's bus, plus Stuart Eddy and a new member Phil (I think -forgotten his name sorry) representing our club made the trek to Tamworth for the two day Tour de Tamworth. Frosty and Brad were racing also, representing their trade teams.
Five divisions were held with varying distances depending on the div.

Elliot started in Div 2 and rode like a demon against a top bunch of 22 ending up finishing in fourth in all three stages which gave him sixth overall.
Ben was in Div 3  and rode well against a tough field of 41 to finish in the front of the bunch in all three legs ending up in equal 9th overall.
Hodgee , Stuart and the new member all in Div 4 in a big field of 45.
Stuart finished well up in all stages and ended the tour in ninth.
Our new member Phil ? in 12th .
Hodgee rode well in the first and second stages but too many beers and take aways while in training   got to him by the third stage and he lost touch with the bunch on the final k's. Still he wasn't last,  five riders behind him and one DNF.
Brad in Div 1 and Frosty in Div 2 worked for their teams as super domestiques doing lots of work for their team leaders which showed in the results with their respective teams taking high places in both Div's. Good work Brad and Mick.

For me as the old fella and being my first ever state open (only ever ridden in Masters opens before) I was slotted into Div 5 which was 35 riders of a club level high C or low B which suited me fine. Two stages on Saturday of 40k's and one of 75k on Sunday.

I finished in the bunch in the first leg in 12th which was due to bad positioning for the final run up to the line which is a three km constant 5-6% climb on a straight narrow country road.

In the second leg I placed myself in third wheel on that final 3k's and with just 200mts to go both the riders in front of me sat up which left me on the front. Unfortunately I was tapped and then swamped on the line leaving me in sixth.
Time bonuses were offered for the first five placegetters which I missed out on.

In the third stage on Sunday I rode on the front for the best part of thirty Kms working with a Mudgee rider trying to keep a solo breakaway of a Tamworth rider in check as five of his buddies in the peleton were blocking the rest to try and give him the win. With about 10 kms to go we all joined up as a stiff headwind increased so I rode smart and sat in the top five or so to try and conserve some energy for the final climb.
As we turned the last corner onto the climb a young Koorangang rider got away which was straight into an icy headwind. Nobody wanted to be at the front so he gained time quickly. As we got to the last two k's I gradually picked off the riders starting in about eighth, somehow surviving at 98% for the whole way. With less than 10 meters to go I was in second then a Tamworth guy on my wheel made a lunge on the line which gave me third. Have to practive those throws!
Overall for the tour I finished in Fifth just three seconds down on second place which was the difference in time bonus between second and third on that final stage. If only!

A fantastic weekend of racing even if it was minus 4 on Friday night. Race start on Saturday was still only 3 or 4 degrees Brrr!
